My kitchen

My kitchen
So, Jenny and I have felt really poor since BC, and have decided to try to live off all the food in our cupboards and not buy groceries. It’s actually working out not too bad. Several people have given us veggies from their gardens and mom bought milk for us at the cottage which has lasted awhile. Yesterday she actually gave me a whole chicken to roast. She buys them from a local farmer every year, and I think was trying to free up the freezer for the next bunch. She was going to use it herself but then was invited out so let us take it. I’ve never done a roast like this before and am not sure I’m doing it all right, but we’ll see. I have a meat thermometer so I should be able to tell when it’s cooked. Mom just bought me a baster. And fun blue bowls. And new oven mitts from a lady at the farmer’s market. Soon I will have a new (to me) fridge and stove too, which is exciting. My stuff is really old and finicky.

Not sure if such a hot and muggy day is the best for such a meal, but I got free food so had to take it.

Roasting is one of the best methods for cooking tender meats. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends cooking meat and poultry at a minimum of 325 degrees. The Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) recommends an internal cooked temperature of 165 to 180 degrees. The food thermometer depicted here is designed to remain in the food while it is cooking in the oven, and is generally used for large items such as a roast or turkey. USDA Photo.
